APPEARANCE: Pearl is a very small young girl who has gray eyes and brown hair usually twisted up into circles on the back of her head. She is always seen wearing her Kurain Medium clothing, which looks like a short kimono with a jacket and a necklace with a magatama on her neck. Picture here.

CANON PERSONALITY:
Pearl is a very sweet, shy, and sheltered young girl. Growing up confined to the village by her overbearing mother, she is very unaware of the larger world outside of her village, not even knowing what a train was in her first appearance. Time and exposure to it all through Maya and Nick have expanded her knowledge considerably, but there are still a great many things she doesn’t know. Because of the strict way her mother raised her, she will flat out not talk to ‘suspicious looking people’ until they’ve acquired some level of trust from her. (Which is hard, when she won’t actually talk to them.)

Despite the very closed off nature of her upbringing, Pearl is incredibly lively and optimistic, while still being incredibly kind and polite in all manners of situations. While in many ways she’s described as being surprisingly refined in speech and mannerisms for her age, in other ways she’s very clearly a child, more than happy to run around playing with a ball or reading children’s books. When introduced to ‘normal’ child things, Pearl tends to get as excited about them as anyone else her age.

Pearl also has a very stubborn attitude when it comes to particular things. Most of the time, it’s that when she sets her mind to something, she will do it. Even if that thing is running to a location that is two hours away by train. Often, however, it’s applied to her perception of Maya and Nick’s relationship. Pearl, being surrounded her entire life by unhappy marriages, believed that Maya and Nick were each others’ ~special someones~ and never took terribly kindly to being told otherwise. She’s so stuck on this ideal that if she even catches Phoenix looking at another woman, she will punch and/or slap him, sometimes to the point of knocking him unconscious. Even if she is normally very sweet, she will not hesitant to tell someone off if she thinks they’d deserved it. She may feel bad afterwards, though.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/a
VETERAN?: Pearl was only around for Code of Dishonor as a young spirit summoner named Harumi, and then wandered off on a Walkabout by herself. To her it didn’t feel like a very long time…
ABILITIES: Pearl is a very talented spirit medium- she can channel the spirits of the dead. The way this works in the Ace Attorney universe is that the user’s spirit is actually shoved aside to make way for the deceased’s spirit, and their whole body morphs to reflect this change. For example, when channeling her cousin, Mia Fey, Pearl’s body changes to have Mia’s facial and body structure (including growing in height by at least a foot)- her hair and clothing remain Pearl’s. She also seems to have above average strength for her age, able to knock out a grown man with her punches.

JUSTIFICATION:
Fool- Pearl is described multiple times as being pure hearted, and her mother kept her sheltered within the confines of the village partially to keep her from being tainted by the evils of the world. Though she has been witness to (and nearly an accessory in) murders and the subsequent trials, Pearl does at her core believe in the good in people, especially those she loves. In addition, due to her sheltered upbringing, Pearl is almost entirely unaware of most of the outside world, except what Maya and Nick have managed to expose her to. She is always willing to experience more than what she knows, however, and definitely has a bit of a spirit of adventure to her.

Empress- …What, you mean you think Empress isn’t going to try and snap up another small child?

Hermit- Being a medium in the Kurian school means a lot of training, a lot of self discipline, and a lot of working to understand yourself. Add that to Pearl being very reluctant to talk to strangers at first and her overall shyness, and this isn’t a terrible match.

Death- Aside from the obvious theme of dealing with death things no I don’t have a type, Pearl has had some major upheavals in her life that have changed the entire course of it. I opted for Death instead of Tower for this because while Tower probably describes the actual events better, Death is more how Pearl herself has dealt with it. Which is to say, about as well as a child her age could- moving forward and recognizing that things have changed while still being sad about the loss.

Sun- A lot of what makes Fool a good pick for her crosses over to Sun, too. Pearl is very optimistic, very open to new things, full of energy and is general a bright spot on anyone’s day. She will move to get things done herself and holds herself responsible for what she feels she did wrong (in many cases, she has done nothing wrong) , even if she tries to hide the exact thing that happened. On a related note, she is possibly the worst liar in the entire series.
VETO: Gonna veto Devil and Priestess, on account of my characters already belonging to them. Even though Priestess could fit Pearly pretty well, sob.
